Sustainability at Westminster School Enterprise
Westminster is a historic school in a UNESCO World Heritage site. Comprising numerous buildings across various sites and covering more than 600 years in age, challenges to sustainability are great, but there is a strong will to work towards becoming a greener, more energy efficient and environmentally responsible organisation, clear in its objective to “reduce the negative environmental impact of our activities, ensuring responsible stewardship of the School and its assets”.
Building work on Chapter House and Adrian House is embracing changes to improve environmental sustainability, and our Great School Masterplan project is helping us to evaluate how we can further adapt our ancient site to reduce its environmental impact. Throughout the estate, we operate food waste collections and mixed dry recycling to complement the existing general waste collection and paper/card recycling, we have changed lighting across a number of areas to energy efficient LED lights and have reduced single use plastic and packaging from catering operations. An active pupil Sustainability Committee works with management and pupils to drive change, and key departments, (Site Services Housekeeping, Catering), are committed to good practice. We work with suppliers and contractors to ensure a sustainable approach.
Our venues are ideally located within walking distance of St James’s Park, Westminster and Victoria stations, making it easy for attendees to travel by public transport. This convenient access helps reduce travel-related emissions and supports lower-impact event planning.
Supporting Sustainable Travel & Accessibility
We make it easier for guests to choose greener ways to travel. On-site bike racks are available, alongside dedicated space for mobility scooters.
Our venues also offer step-free access, ensuring all guests can move comfortably throughout the space and creating an inclusive and accessible environment for every event.
Energy-Efficient Operations
Our buildings incorporate smart energy systems designed to minimise unnecessary energy use. This includes motion sensor lighting and energy-efficient LED installations, helping to reduce our overall environmental footprint without compromising on comfort or atmosphere.
Responsible Catering
Lodestone House’s sustainability approach centres on “social value”, blending environmental and social responsibility. They prioritise seasonal British ingredients, carbon-conscious sourcing and measurable goals, while also investing in people, communities and food education.
Plan a More Sustainable Event
By combining a central, well-connected location with thoughtful operational practices, Westminster School Enterprise provides a strong foundation for more sustainable events in London.
